Betsy Robinett, CPM

Betsy’s journey into midwifery began with her own third birth, an experience that quietly shifted everything for her. At a time when routine interventions were the norm, she was cared for by a doctor who allowed her body to labor naturally, without an IV, continuous monitoring, or an automatic episiotomy. It opened her eyes to what birth could look like, and she remembers thinking, “I could have done that at home!” That moment planted a seed that would grow into a 21-year journey of faithfully serving families as a midwife through First Light Midwifery Services in De Leon, Texas.

What Betsy loves most about this work is the deep connection she builds with her clients and their families. For her, it’s never just about the birth; it’s about the relationships that form along the way and often last for years. She treasures the time spent walking closely with mothers through pregnancy and the postpartum period, especially the in-depth conversations that unfold during that season. There’s a steadiness and presence she brings that makes families feel seen, known, and truly cared for.

After more than two decades of catching babies, there are many births she carries in her heart—but one still stands out. She recalls checking a laboring mama and, to her surprise, realizing she could barely fit one finger in during the exam. The thought crossed her mind, “How is a 6-pound baby going to come out of there?!” And yet, just as birth so often does, it unfolded in its own way: the baby was born beautifully, and there were no tears. A quiet reminder of how capable the body truly is.

Betsy continues to grow in her practice by staying connected with younger birth workers, always learning, always listening, and staying “on the edge of her seat.” She shares that while her clinical skills may not be unique, her experiences, personality, and identity are, and one of her greatest strengths is being a “motherly” midwife. What she once thought was common, she’s come to realize is something truly special: a mother’s heart woven into the care she gives each family.

Being part of the Texas Community Midwives means so much to Betsy. She speaks with gratitude about the support of her sister midwives and the sense of community they’ve built together; it’s something she deeply values and doesn’t take for granted.

Outside of birth work, Betsy finds rest in simple, meaningful moments, wandering with her husband, Jackie, whether revisiting well-loved places or exploring somewhere new. She also has a love for travel and dreams of visiting places like Scotland and South America. Jackie has been her steady support from the very beginning of her journey as a student midwife, faithfully walking alongside her through every high and low. Whether he’s lifting her up in hard moments or even “babysitting” her phone so she can get some much-needed rest, his presence has been a constant source of strength.

If you ask Betsy what she wants families to carry with them, it’s simple: “Trust the process.” She also believes deeply that “Your midwife is a friend for life.” It’s a reflection of how she shows up relational, committed, and present long after the birth is over.

A fun little detail: Betsy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Math (and yes, she’ll probably catch your spelling errors 😉). And when it comes to daily fuel, she’s not too picky. She truly enjoys just about any drink.
